Ross qualified from Newcastle in 1984. Determined to be an academic orthodontist, he undertook house jobs in Birmingham and Newcastle. He was a junior lecturer in oral biology for 2 years gaining his Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) degree. He then headed north to Glasgow for his registrar training in oral and maxillo facial surgery, paedodontics (children's dentistry), prosthodontics (dentures), periodontics and oral medicine, gaining his Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS, RCPS).

Ross travelled to Dundee for his specialist registrar training in orthodontics, passing his MDOrth examination before returning to Newcastle as Lecturer in Orthodontics in 1992. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in 2001. He was head of Child Dental Health and Degree Programme Director for the MSc in Orthodontics 3 years specialist training until he left the university in April 2009.

In 2000 Ross founded the first private-only specialist orthodontic practice in the North of England and is the owner and driver of the development of the Windmill Dental Suite, the North of England's first private specialist referral centre. In 2010 he established Windmill Orthodontics a series of specialist orthodontics practices across the North of England.

Ross has an international reputation as an exceptional clinical orthodontist, having led the world renowned Newcastle Hypodontia Team for 10 years. His clinical expertise in the management of hypodontia (missing teeth), orthognathic (jaw) surgery and ectopic/ unerupted (misplaced) teeth is unsurpassed. Ross has published over 100 articles on orthodontics, dental material and dental education research. He has been active in developing dental education for both undergraduates and postgraduates in the North East, the UK and internationally in Europe. This was recognised in 2009 when Ross became the first dentist to be awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. In the same year, the Association for Dental Education presented him with their Excellence in Dental Education award.

Ross has also been active in dental politics; he chaired the Central Dental Academic Staff Committee and was a member of the executive board of the British Dental Association from 2004-2008. In 2010 Ross was awarded Fellowship for the BDA (the associations highest honour) for his work for the BDA and the dental profession.

He is married to Sally, a school head teacher and has two boys, Peter and Simon. In his spare time he is a keen sailor, racing in the world's biggest events - holding two world records and a number of major race wins.

Peter Maguire

Born and raised in Liverpool, Peter qualified from Bristol in 1978 and immediately moved to Newcastle Dental Hospital for a one year house officer post – a move north which became permanent. Leaving hospital employment to work in general dental practice, he worked in west Newcastle and Houghton le Spring before settling into practice in Gateshead as a partner in 1984. In 1990 he was fortunate to be accepted onto Newcastle Dental Hospital’s extended training programme for general practitioners, and since then has provided orthodontic treatment from his general practice for patients of several other practices in the area, with orthodontic treatment making up about half of his workload. Following the reorganisation of local NHS orthodontic services in April 2012, he has now joined Windmill Orthodontics in Gateshead on a part-time basis to continue to provide orthodontic treatment as major part of a varied professional life.

He is married to Anne, a senior lecturer in Child Dental Health at Newcastle Dental School and they have two grown-up daughters. For relaxation, he is a keen photographer, and also enjoys walking in this country and abroad.

Maria Wu

Maria was born and raised in Seville, Spain. She obtained her Dental Surgery degree at Alfonso X el Sabio University, Madrid in 2005. She moved to England to work as a general dentist combined with studying a Certificate in Orthodontics by Ghnatos Foundation in Madrid.

In 2008 she undertook her orthodontic training in the Advanced Program in Orthodontics for International Dentists at New York University College of Dentistry, USA. After that, she obtained her Diploma in Advance Studies in Orthodontics at Seville University in 2010.

She lived in London for two and a half years working in different orthodontic practices in Oxford, Kent and London before moving to Newcastle in April 2012 to join the Windmill Orthodontics team. Currently, she is studying for her PhD in Orthodontics which she plans to complete in December 2012.

Maria has a special interest in research and she would like to combine an academic-research role with orthodontic clinical work.

She is married to Ruben, a general dentist with special interest in aesthetic dentistry and on her free time she enjoys travelling around the world, scuba diving and skiing.
