Ross qualified from Newcastle in 1984. Determined to be an academic orthodontist, he undertook house jobs in Birmingham and Newcastle. He was a junior lecturer in oral biology for 2 years gaining his Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) degree. He then headed north to Glasgow for his registrar training in oral and maxillo facial surgery, paedodontics (children's dentistry), prosthodontics (dentures), periodontics and oral medicine, gaining his Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS, RCPS).

Ross travelled to Dundee for his specialist registrar training in orthodontics, passing his MDOrth examination before returning to Newcastle as Lecturer in Orthodontics in 1992. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in 2001. He was head of Child Dental Health and Degree Programme Director for the MSc in Orthodontics 3 years specialist training until he left the university in April 2009.

In 2000 Ross founded the first private-only specialist orthodontic practice in the North of England and is the owner and driver of the development of the Windmill Dental Suite, the North of England's first private specialist referral centre. In 2010 he established Windmill Orthodontics a series of specialist orthodontics practices across the North of England.

Ross has an international reputation as an exceptional clinical orthodontist, having led the world renowned Newcastle Hypodontia Team for 10 years. His clinical expertise in the management of hypodontia (missing teeth), orthognathic (jaw) surgery and ectopic/ unerupted (misplaced) teeth is unsurpassed. Ross has published over 100 articles on orthodontics, dental material and dental education research. He has been active in developing dental education for both undergraduates and postgraduates in the North East, the UK and internationally in Europe. This was recognised in 2009 when Ross became the first dentist to be awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. In the same year, the Association for Dental Education presented him with their Excellence in Dental Education award.

Ross has also been active in dental politics; he chaired the Central Dental Academic Staff Committee and was a member of the executive board of the British Dental Association from 2004-2008. In 2010 Ross was awarded Fellowship for the BDA (the associations highest honour) for his work for the BDA and the dental profession.

He is married to Sally, a school head teacher and has two boys, Peter and Simon. In his spare time he is a keen sailor, racing in the world's biggest events - holding two world records and a number of major race wins.

Sandy Karnezi

Sandy first attained a scientific background by obtaining a BSc in Molecular Biology followed by a Masters in Biomedical Sciences Research from Queen Mary and Westfield College and King’s College University of London. This was followed by her Dental Surgery qualification with honours from Leeds University in 2003. Over the next 5 years she gained experience in general dental practice as well as working at the York District hospital in the Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery department.

Sandy became a member of the Fellowship of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005. In 2008 she was appointed Registrar in Orthodontics at the Leeds Dental Institute where she gained a Masters Degree in Dental Science. In 2011 she also attained the Membership of Orthodontics of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh and entered the specialist register in Orthodontics.

One of the most recent presentations was that given at the British Orthodontic Conference in Harrogate 2011 where she presented her research project with the title ‘A decision aid for patients considering orthognathic treatment’.

In 2011 she also worked at the Leeds Dental Institute as a lecturer in Orthodontics where she supervised undergraduate dental students as part of their dental training.

Sandy’s interests outside orthodontics are travelling, good food and her young family.

Say Mei Lim

Say Mei qualified from Kings London in 1985. After qualifying she under took a house post at Kings College Hospital in Oral Surgery and Paediatrics. Following that she held a Senior House Officer post at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital Sheffield with rotations between Oral Surgery and Restorative Department. After this period Say Mei continued onto a Vocational Training job in general practice.

She located to Sheffield for her specialist registrar training in orthodontics, passing her MOrth examination. From 1995 until April 2012 she has held a part time staff grade post at Sheffield Dental Hospital which involved undergraduate teaching. She has also worked in specialist practices around the Yorkshire Region since qualifying as an orthodontist.

Her clinical skills consist of management of hypodontia (missing teeth), orthognathic (jaw) surgery and ectopic/ unerupted (misplaced) teeth (impacted canine). She is a member of the BDA and BOS.

Say Mei is originally from Malaysia but now lives in Leeds with her family. Most of her spare time is taken up by her son’s numerous extra curricula activities. She enjoys travelling, cooking and hiking.

Marcela Vieira

Marcela studied Dentistry at the University of Seville, Spain, where she qualified in 2005. She then moved to Nottingham, where she worked as an associate general dental practitioner for three years.

In 2008 she returned to Spain and was selected for a three-year Master’s programme in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics at the University of Alcalá, in Madrid, where she obtained her MSc in Orthodontics in 2011.

Since then she has worked exclusively as an orthodontist. In September 2013, she has joined the Windmill Orthodontics team.

Marcela was born in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and raised in Setúbal (Portugal). Outside dentistry, she has a keen interest in spending time with her family and friends, painting, photography, travelling and scuba diving.
