Ross qualified from Newcastle in 1984, determined to be a academic orthodontics he undertook house jobs in Birmingham and Newcastle. He then was a junior lecturer in Oral biology for 2 years gaining his Masters in Dental Surgery (MDS) degree. He then headed North to Glasgow for his registrar training in Oral and Maxillo facial Surgery, Paedodontics (children's dentistry), Prosthodontics (dentures), Periodontics and Oral Medicine gaining his Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS).
Ross travelled to Dundee for his Specialist Registrar training in Orthodontics, passing his MOrth examination before returning to Newcastle as Lecturer in Orthodontics in 1992. In Newcastle was promoted to Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant. He was head of Child Dental Health and Degree Programme Director for the MSc in Orthodontics 3 years specialist training until he left the university in April 2009.
In 2000 he founded the first private only specialist orthodontic practice in the North of England and is the owner and driver of the development of the Windmill Dental Suite, the North of England's first private specialist referral centre. In 2010 he opened Windmill Orthodontics, a multi centres specialist practice across the North of England with practices in Carlisle, Gateshead, Penrith and Newcastle.
Ross has an international reputation as an exceptional clinical orthodontist, having lead the world renowned Newcastle Hypodontia Team for 10 years. His clinical expertise is in management of hypodontia (missing teeth), orthognathic (jaw) surgery and ectopic/ unerupted (misplaced) teeth. Ross has published over 100 articles on orthodontics, dental material and dental education research. He has been active in developing dental education for both undergraduate and postgraduates in the North East, the UK and internationally in Europe. This was recognised in 2009 in being the first dentist to be awarded the prestigious Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, in the same year the Association for Dental Education presented him with their Excellence in Dental Education award.
He is married to Sally, a school teacher and has two boys, Peter and Simon. In his spare time he is a keen sailor, racing in the world’s biggest events - holding 2 world records and a number of major race wins.

Ian qualified from Newcastle University in 1984, the same year as Ross Hobson. Ian’s career has developed in General Practice – he has established and developed many practices in the Teesside and North Yorkshire areas. His first training in Orthodontics was as a Clinical Assistant to the Orthodontists at Middlesbrough General Hospital in the late 1980s. He then continued to provide Orthodontic treatment to his own patients most recently to patients in The Dental Centre Group. He has experience of functional and fixed appliances and is happy to coordinate provision of Orthodontic treatment with General Dentistry.
